The People's Republic of China (PRC), also known as China, is a socialist republic with it's capital in Beijing. At over 3.7 million square miles (over 9.5 million km2), the PRC is the third largest country by area. China's landscape is varied with largely desert on the north and humid and mountainous on the east and largely dry in the western part of the country. It is also the world's most populous nation, with over 1.3 billion citizens and borders the most countries in the world with 14 independent countries.

Chinese Education System
 
To provide for its population in mainland China, the PRC has a vast and varied school system. Primary education includes pre-school education and elementary education. Pre-school, or kindergarten, can last up to three years, with children entering as early as age three, until age six, when they typically enter elementary school.

China has adopted a nine-year compulsory schooling system, which means all children are required to attend school for at least nine years. Students have to complete both the primary school program and the junior middle-school program. Higher education is only for those students who have passed examinations of all levels.
